Illness Fatal to Well Know Manufacturer

Lawrence Murphy Succumbs at New Brighton Home Sunday Noon

Foundry Owner Made Name for Himself in Foundry Business Here

November 30, 1933?

Lawrence Murphy, aged 78 years, prominent Beaver County manufacturer, died at his home, 537 Twelth Avenue, New Brighton, at noon yesterday after a several weeks illness.

Born in Allegheny, N. S. Pittsburgh, July 10, 1855, Mr. Murphy had made his home in New Brighton for the past fifty years.

As a young man he learned the molder’s trade and engaged in the foundry business in Allegheny. When fire destroyed the foundry he became identified with Knott, Harker & Company in Beaver Fall, in an executive capacity. Mr. Murphy played an active part in its development from a small concern to a large business.

After 25 years with this company he resigned and removed to Eureka, CA., identifying himself with one of the leading foundries there. At the urgent request of the Keystone Driller company he resigned that position and, returning to Beaver Falls, bent his efforts toward developing the foundry business for the driller concern.

After a successful operation he resigned, and with his oldest son, William G. Murphy, became engaged in a foundry business of their own under the name of the Murphy Foundry Company, Beaver Falls. After 16 years of participation he retired.

Mr. Murphy took an active and constructive part in the development of New Brighton and Beaver Falls, and was at all times greatly interested in every movement for the betterment of the two communities.

He was held in high esteem by all how knew him and his death is a distinct loss to both towns.

October 13, 1876 he married Anna Weiss, and the couple marked their 57th wedding anniversary this month.

He leaves in addition to his widow five sons, William G., Robert, Louis, Lawrence and John Murphy, four daughters, Mrs. George Garvin, Margaret at home, Mrs. Jacob Weiskopf and Mrs. John Hurley. Seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held from the family home at 8:30 o’clock Tuesday morning with high mass of requiem at St. Joseph’s R. C. church at 9 o’clock and interment in St. Joseph’s cemetery, New Brighton.
